Stroke Readiness Initiative

This Nebraska Stroke Advisory Council recommends that healthcare institutions begin voluntarily conducting careful and thorough assessments of their level of stroke care. Institutions caring for stroke victims should use evidence-based practice guidelines and performance-improvement measures to maximize their effectiveness, given their level of resources.

The hospitals’ level of care should be explicitly stated so that patients and prehospital providers can make appropriate decisions regarding the site of care. Communities and regions should assess available stroke care resources and create cooperating stroke networks to match patient needs with available resources. Transfer protocols should be written to ensure that patients receive appropriate care in a timely fashion.

Despite regional and community resource variability, a stroke care quality improvement process should be established at every health care institution. Protocols and care plans tailored to each institution should be outlined and supported.
